The Bay Area based Bangla rock band, Saampan, has its roots for the last 18 years. Formed in 2005, Saampan evangelizes contemporary Bangla gaan – from the footsteps of Mohiner Ghoraguli, Cactus, Fossils, Chandrabindoo, Anjan Dutta down to the modern day bands like Prithibi, Fakira and the songs of Anupam Roy. The band has had numerous shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and has performed at NABC a couple of times. The band was also featured in a television show during the World Music Festival.
About the show:
We would like to pay homage to the roots of Bangla rock – “A Tribute to Mohiner Ghoraguli”.
Music of Mohiner Ghoraguli emerged during the cultural renaissance of the 1970s in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. With their eclectic fusion of folk, rock, blues, and jazz music, Mohiner Ghoraguli revolutionized the Bengali music scene and left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of the region. Their music was characterized by its poetic lyrics, soulful melodies, and experimental arrangements – drawing inspiration from various genres and artists, blending traditional Bengali folk tunes with elements of Western music. They disbanded in mid 1980’s but their legacy endured, and the band’s music continued to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners – and also us.
Saampan will present a bouquet of songs from Mohin and Goutam Chattopadhyay. While staying true to the originals, the band will also bring their unique musical perspective to the musical arrangement to enrich the experience for the audience.
